On their new self-titled EP, Doot distill the essence of acts like Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds country classic “Sweet Heart Of The Rodeo”, in turn, creating their own very special alt-country vintage!
“We broke down like a worn out engine, out of fuel, dyin’ in the dust… We couldn’t stop all the bad love ending ‐ I’m gonna leave this one to rust…”
From the North Coast of New South Wales comes Alt‐Country sensation Doot. With their roots in the wide open plains of Australia, paired with well‐travelled ears, Doot deliver a sound that is both classic and original, familiar yet surprising, rocking and rootsy, heartfelt and feel‐good.
Doot is a veritable Who’s Who of Australian Country Music musicians, having individually worked with some of Australia’s biggest names including Troy Cassar‐Daley, Graeme Connors, The Flood, Melinda Schneider, Paul Kelly, Nick Barker and Felicity Urquart, to name a few. Doot is: Dave Irving – vocals and acoustic guitar. Paul Agar – pedal steel, electric guitar, and backing vocals. Alan Brooker – bass, Scott Hills ‐ drums.
“My pure intentions were misunderstood and my best excuses never did no good…”
The Doot EP is led by Worn Out Engine, a tale of love gone bad lightened by smart wordplay, sublime harmonies and a propulsive, hopeful melody. Recorded and mixed at Heaven Recording Studios in northern NSW, Doot was then mastered in New York by mastering legend Scott Hull.
These are songs custom‐made for echoing across a field at sunset, for making grown men cry into their beer and then booting ’em out at the other end with a smile on their face.
“A woman like that is like gravity, a powerful force from which you can’t break free…”
Meet Doot. One listen, and you’ll feel as though you’ve known this smartly‐dressed four‐piece all your life.

EP Review by John Williams
This is an exciting EP, one that I really enjoyed. It sounded great from the start and continued to grow on me as I listened to it. It is a good one for sitting back, beer in hand, watching a sunset. It creates a real country mood.
The six tracks and a remix of the first track ooze quality performance and show the experience of the four North Coast musicians.
Doot is made up of Dave Irving (vocals and acoustic guitar), Paul Agar (pedal steel, electric guitar and backing vocals), Alan Brooker (base) and Scott Hills (drums).
They have collectively had years of experience and it shows with the great musicianship, strong rhythms, great singing, including good harmonies, and an all around tight performance. Even better all six tracks are originals.
Over the years Doot members have played with Australian music royalty including Troy Cassar-Daly, Paul Kelly, Graham Connors, Melinda Schneider, Nick Barker and Felicity Urquart just to name some of them. The four members of Doot put this experience to great use in this EP.
I really liked the opening track ‘Worn Out Engine’ and on this EP you get it as a remixed final track. It is interesting to compare the two as the remix is really tight and should enable the band to get more airplay.
If you are a country music fan you already know of these musicians and will appreciate their work. I can highly recommend the EP and hopefully it will open some people’s eyes to give country music a go where they may not have previously shown an interest. They are that good! A highly recommended EP and one that leaves you wanting to hear a full album in the near future.
