Jim Stubbs’ album “Everything I Need”
by Jane Harding, Folk Presenter 2WCR FM 99.5 Coonabarabran
JSBB’s live performances are characterised by three talented musicians playing acoustic folk and blues with a sense of fun and playfulness that has delighted audiences at numerous festival and folk club appearances across NSW in recent years.
In this recording, they have successfully captured this ambience – it’s like having them play live in your sitting room.
It contains a nice balance of songs and instrumentals, produced in such a way that the trio’s warmth just shines out of your speakers!
Kellie Stubbs’ honey contralto is well complemented by father Jim’s effortless harmonica, and Steve MacDonald’s airy finger style guitar holds the whole production together.
It’s also great to hear him playing lap slide on numbers like Midnight on the Water and Down to the River.
I particularly like Kellie’s voice in the blues songs “Spoonful” and “Women Be Wise”, and I want to thank Jim and his A harp for introducing me to one of the loveliest tunes I know – “Coleman’s March!”
It’s great to have the key of each track reproduced on the liner notes, as well as the harp used.
It really brings it home that this recording is as much about showcasing the beauty of straight harmonica as it is about great folk/blues songs.
Fans of JSBB have been waiting 18 months for this CD, and I can tell you it’s worth it!
“Everything I Need” is a beautifully crafted recording, summed up in three words – tight, sweet and sassy!
Well done Kellie, Jim and Steve!
