Shimhor – The Score
by Roger Holdsworth
On first listening to ‘The Score’, one might think it a presentation of an Australian-celtic tradition – yet all tracks are written and/or arranged by this NSW-based quartet.
The instruments are familiar: guitar (Tim Phelan, John Bell), fiddle (Peter Coombes), mandolin (Rosalie Thor) and drum, with occasional additions of recorder, trombone, cello and keyboards from these core group members or their guests.
All these musicians also sing; Tim and Rosalie are the main writers.
Shimhor write stories about Ireland and Australia (hopes and disasters – what else?), but also present universal songs about leaving, being apart and living close to the land.
It’s good time music to move the feet and heart and occasionally to wallop you into thinking.
