“Sydney band Keklik Aile has recorded a fine album of World Music. Most of the tracks on this album are traditional. About half are from Greece and Turkey, most of the rest are from neighboring lands of Bulgaria, Lebanon, Syria, and Russia, while India, China and Cuba are also represented. Two of the tracks are instrumentals. The rest feature the excellent vocals of Linda Marr, who is well-known for her work with Nakisa, Blindman’s Holiday, and Tokakros. Yuri Halay and Elias Ellis provide backing vocals, and all three members play a number of instruments, stringed (guitar, oud, and others), wind (clarinet and kaval) or percussion. The musicianship is excellent, and the arrangements are tasteful. The album is a joy to listen to. I would like to have seen more information in the liner notes. If you don’t know zils from darbukas, you still won’t after you’ve read everything on offer here, even though both zils and darbukas are used. You won’t know much about the songs, either, as no lyrics are given, not in the original language and not in English.” Review by Gerry Myerson.

“The group’s name translates actually into “Partridge Family” but the music is authentic tunes and songs from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and some other spots. The trio consists of Linda Marr (also founding member of famous Blindman’s Holiday), Yuri Halay and Elias Ellis. Between them they play a vast array of exotic instruments, incl. baglama, clarinet, kaval, oud, tapan, zils, mazha, darabuke, murli, domra and more. This is authentic and interesting traditional music from these countries, performed by experts on the subject.” Review by Dieter Bajzek.
