ALWAYS LIVE and The Boîte proudly present Boîte Voices: Maiem – Songs of the Torres Strait Islands, at Melbourne Recital Centre on November 30.
In an unforgettable fusion of voices and exploration of cultures through voice, Torres Strait Islands Artistic Directors, Deb Lowah Clark and Luke Captain, along with Choir Director, Stella Savy, will lead a powerful ensemble of 180 singers from across Victoria.
Together, they will bring to life the rich musical traditions of Zenadth Kes, the Torres Strait Islands, in a stunning blend of songs performed in English, Meriam Mir, and Kala Lagaw Ya.
In this once in a lifetime experience, the legendary Christine Anu will grace the stage as special guest performer, amplifying the power and beauty of this First Nations led project exclusively at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday, November 30.
Anu will be performing tracks from her newly released album, ‘Waku – Minaral A Minalaya’, amongst some crowd favourites (‘My Island Home’ etc.).
A matinee show on Sunday, December 1, will follow at The Goods Shed, Ballarat, featuring Torres Strait Islander cultural leaders Deb Lowah Clark and Luke Captain.
Maiem offers a moving celebration of the culture, language, and spirit of the Torres Strait Islands.
Exclusive to Victoria, and presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE and supported by Creative Victoria, this First Nations led event promises to move audiences.
This event is part of ALWAYS LIVE, a state wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.
Since 1979, The Boîte has actively supported artists from diverse communities and promoted cultural understanding through the presentation of live music.
Our work has enriched and broadened Melbourne’s live music landscape with truly representative programming, and continues to challenge assumptions around the boundaries of genre, culture and tradition.
