Zulya – Elusive

$25.00

Zulya’s 2002 release is something of a departure from the traditional Tatar singing style which has dominated her previous two CD releases. More experimental and original, yet still with the strong ethnic authenticity that characterises her work, the CD features a number of well respected Australian musicians, including Blair Greenberg, Llew Kiek, Andrew Tanner, Martin Tucker, Epizo Bangoura and Paul Jarman.

“This new album is certainly another rarity on the Australian music scene. Tasmanian singer and composer Zulya has put together an album of 12 new songs, mostly written by herself (with the help of Martin Tucker on 3 songs) and performed in mostly Tatar and Russian language. She is now further developing her more contemporary style of Tatar influenced music, but combined with a wealth of influences from various countries. Contributing to this are also a number of wonderful musicians playing a wide range of exotic and beautiful acoustic instruments, which are used throughout the CD in various and subtle combinations. The delivery of the songs by Zulya is quite exquisite and expressive in a gentle and delightful manner. The booklet contains all the words and translations, and one will need a little time to fully appreciate the meaning of all the songs – or you can just listen and enjoy the almost mystical sound.” Review by Dieter Bajzek.
