Paul Lawler & the Just Desserts – A Taste of Good Music

$25.00

A Taste of Good Music is the very fitting title for a host of delectable songs, all of which are recipes set to very singable tunes in different folk styles. Although this may all sound a little strange, this collection of songs works very well. Paul’s versatility and vocal ability get the various musical styles just right. The infectious and tasteful backing vocals, the competent musicianship and the spot-on production, make you wonder why we have waited so long for Paul Lawler’s first CD. The title is right – this album is definitely A Taste of Good Music : a sumptuous musical meal from a fine singer/songwriter.

Paul Lawler and the Just Desserts – A Taste of Good Music
Review by John Williams

Move over Jamie Oliver.
The recipe book has just been re-written.
Paul Lawler has created a musical and culinary masterpiece combined.
This enjoyable CD uses many musical styles to enable the listener to create some of Paul’s favorite recipes.
Yes it is different but everyone should find something to their taste (sorry about that).
Paul has a long history in folk scenes having been a co-founder of the Top End Folk Club in Darwin and director of the Woodford Folk Festival Fire Event amongst other achievements.
The CD begins with an upbeat calypso number, “Corrie’s Coconut Cabbage Soup” and this sets the tone for a musical journey with a difference.
“Rayner’s Scallops” has a medieval feel with a harpsichord sound making a lovely backing.
“Sandy’s Patent Leather Pie” has a great violin backing with a bluegrass feel.
Paul sounds like Eric Bogle in this track.
“Fillets of Sole St Germain” is in the style of an old English folk song with lovely harmonies.
“M.P.s Vegie Slice” has a country feel with a great violin track.
“Val’s Cherries Jubilee” has beautiful harmonies which would not be out of place in St Paul’s Cathedral.
“Throw it on the Barbie” has a 60’s pop feel to it.
“Chendie’s Meatloaf Blues” says it all.
My personal favorites are “Pork Fillets in Apple and Guinness Sauce”.
It has an AC/DC feel and sounds scrumptious.
And for dessert you can’t go past “Phil and Kylie’s Sticky Date Pudding” with its gospel sound.
This CD is a musical treat and a lot of fun to listen to.
The female backing singers (The Just Desserts) sound great.
I can recommend this CD.
Now I am off to cook.
